Microsoft’s search for a new CEO is close to coming to an end, as the company is ready to announce that Satya Nadella, the man in charge of its cloud business, would replace Steve Ballmer at the helm of the software giant.

Reports published by Reuters and Bloomberg and citing people close to the matter claim that Microsoft’s decision to pick Satya Nadella as the next CEO is mostly based on the fact that the company needs a tech-savvy leader that could continue the tech giant’s transition towards devices and services.

Satya Nadella, born in Hyderabad, India in 1967, has been with the company for no less than 22 years, and is considered an internal talent that has what it takes to become the third CEO in Microsoft’s history and take over from Steve Ballmer.

Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992, but was appointed head of the server and tools division in 2011. Under the new reorganization, this particular unit also absorbed the cloud business, so Nadella holds a key role for Microsoft’s future in devices and services.

Even though many could say that the Microsoft CEO role could be a bit overwhelming for Satya Nadella, the tech giant’s board is already considering several options to make sure that the transition to another leader takes place as smooth as possible.

Microsoft’s co-founder and chairman Bill Gates has promised to work closer with the new CEO in order to make sure that everything goes as planned and the right decisions are made on the long term.

The company is yet to announce Nadella’s appointment publicly, but according to several sources, an announcement is expected to be made as soon as next week.

Nadella’s first public appearance as Microsoft CEO will take place in April 2014 at the BUILD developer conference when the company is also expected to unveil plans for Windows 9.
