Sure, the bulging rear of the handset may not feel innovative, but slimming down a handset’s thickness isn’t really the key point here. Unlike the Android-based Galaxy Camera, the Zoom seems more of a phone with some compact-shooter abilities like the Altek Leo we saw back in 2010. The Galaxy Camera was more a camera running Android, which meant that it was on powered off in a low-powered state most of the time with 3G/LTE turned off.

As a phone, the S4 Zoom has to remain on what I guess would be a higher power standby mode to ensure calls and messages come through, and its likely Samsung will want to keep the camera portion off until its needed to conserve power. This could mean a slower start up time for the shooter. Note that this is all my guesswork for now, of course.

With a dual-core 1.5GHz processor similar to the S4 Mini, as well as a 4.3-inch display, the S4 Zoom specs seem pretty average, but that’s to be expected. Samsung is likely trying to keep the costs down, especially since the optical lens and larger sensor of the handset will mean the Zoom is likely not cheap.

The S4 Zoom packs 8GB of internal storage that’s expandable thanks to the microSD card slot, which means you can always swap in a fresh microSd card if you run out of space while snapping your holiday pictures.

The S4 Zoom is expected to launch in Q3 , though pricing has not yet been revealed. Whether it will resonate with consumers remains to be seen, though if the Zoom can take really good pictures.
