⬤ Google has updated the Results about you tool to simplify the removal of personal data from search results.
⬤ Users can now request the removal of outdated content, illegal material, and personal information more easily.
⬤ Originally launched in 2022, the tool is currently available in several countries, with plans for global expansion.
With growing concerns over digital privacy and the exposure of personal information online, Google has introduced an enhanced tool that gives users greater control over their data. The search engine giant has made significant updates to the Results about you tool, making it easier than ever to remove sensitive data from Google Search results.
Google first launched the Results about you tool in 2022, but at the time, it was a relatively hidden feature within account settings and primarily accessible via the Google app. However, the latest update has moved the tool directly into the search interface itself.
To simplify the process, users can now click on the three-dot menu next to any search result, where they will find an option to remove that result. Selecting this option allows users to submit three types of requests to address different concerns: removing outdated results, reporting illegal content, and deleting personal information.
The updated feature is currently available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France, Sweden, Thailand, India, and Indonesia, with promises to expand its availability worldwide in the future.
To use the Results about you tool, users must first enter the personal information they wish to protect, such as their names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. While this step may seem counterintuitive, it is necessary for Google to proactively scan search results for any matches. When a match is found, users receive notifications, allowing them to request immediate removal.
Google assures users that the entered information remains strictly confidential and is not shared or used to personalize their experience across other Google services.
This update marks a significant improvement compared to previous versions of the tool, particularly the 2023 update, which introduced proactive scanning and an expanded control panel. Now, interacting with the tool is even more seamless. Users are encouraged to check their Results about you dashboard regularly, where they can track the status of removal requests and monitor any new instances of their personal data appearing in search results. Additionally, users can opt to receive notifications via phone or email whenever their data is detected.
While this tool is powerful in removing personal data from Google Search results, it does not delete the information from the original websites where it is hosted. Therefore, Results about you serves as a protective measure within Google’s search ecosystem, while users seeking complete data removal must contact the hosting websites directly.
