The company today revealed that a Surface 2 (4G LTE) would be available starting tomorrow in the United States via retail stores, Microsoft’s online stores, and Best Buy.
As you could easily figure out from its name, the new device comes with LTE connectivity from AT&T and while no wireless contract is needed, word is that the mobile carrier might at some point launch a deal for the Surface 2 tablet.
Basically, the device boasts the same features as the Surface 2 and has exactly the same dimensions, although Microsoft says that it is a bit heavier than the standard model.
It’s only offered with 64 GB of storage, but a 32 GB version might follow soon, depending on the overall success of the device.
Available in the United States with $679 (€490), the Surface 2 with LTE might also arrive in Europe with 4G connectivity offered by Vodafone, even though negotiations are said to be under way right now. No kind of cover is offered with the device.
Probably the only thing that you’re going to notice is the addition of a SIM tray which can be opened with the fingernail, so there’s no need for a pin opener.
“In addition, when you purchase Surface 2 (4G LTE) you’ll receive 200 GB of free OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive) storage for two years. Mobile professionals, as well as anyone who wants access to their digital life and work while in motion, are going to love it,” Microsoft revealed in today’s announcement.
The software giant has also mentioned in the end of the announcement that “it promises to be an exciting year for Surface,” which could be an indication that more devices are coming for the Surface product family and the company might focus a little bit more on the hardware side of its business.
People close to the development process said a few months ago that Microsoft was also working on a smaller tablet with an 8-inch screen that would compete against the likes of iPad mini and Nexus 7. The Surface Mini is expected to launch this year as well with Windows RT 8.1 and an NVIDIA CPU that would be specifically optimized for longer battery life and high performance, especially for gaming.
