If you’ve been thinking about a Zune HD but wished it had more storage capacity, Microsoft has some news for you: the company has just announced a new 64 GB version of its Zune HD portable media player will go on sale April, 2010. The 64 GB players will initially be available through ZuneOriginals.com—where customers can trick them out with their choices of colors and custom etching—although the players are expected to make their way to other retailers in short order.
The 64 GB Zune HD will be priced at $349.99; with the introduction, Microsoft is also dropping the prices of its existing 16 GB and 32 GB Zune HDs to $199.99 and $269.99, respectively. Microsoft is also promising more information on the Zune 4.5 firmware update “in the coming days” to clarify what new features and capabilities will be granted to Zunes—Microsoft has already talked about support for more video formats, on-board Smart DJ auto-playlists, and the ability to browse/buy/stream music from the Zune Marketplace to a television (via a dock).
Aside from increased storage capacity, the 64 GB Zune HD remains unchanged from earlier Zune HD models: in addition to audio and video player capabilities, key features include HD Radio, high-definition video output, Wi-Fi, an OLED multitouch display, and the ability to acquire new applications through Zune Marketplace.
