Today, during the proceedings of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 event held in Barcelona, a highly significant announcement for the Middle East region was revealed: the President of the global GSMA organization, along with the Qatari Minister of Communications and Information Technology, confirmed the arrival of a version of the MWC event to the Qatari capital in the fourth quarter of this year.
According to the memorandum of understanding signed between Mr. John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA, and His Excellency Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the State of Qatar, the MWC Doha event will be launched on November 25th and 26th of this year, 2025.
According to the information we have been able to access so far, the MWC Doha event will cover an area of 12,000 square meters, and will welcome 5,000 people from 60 countries, with 40% of them at the administrative level. There will also be more than 200 speakers and many companies seeking to showcase the highlights of their technologies at the exhibition.
In his speech after the signing, Mr. John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA, said: “Last year, during the M360 MENA event, we were pleased and inspired by the warm welcome we received from the Qatari Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, which hosted us. The event was a great success with more than a thousand guests from 50 countries, and it was a testament to what is possible to achieve for an MWC event there. Our vision for MWC Doha is to become an integral part of Qatar’s growing role as a global hub for technological innovation, and to showcase digital transformation in areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G-Advanced networks, and smart transportation.”
His Excellency Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the State of Qatar, said: “Today we announce that Qatar will host the Mobile World Congress event for five years, and the MWC Doha event will be a strategic bridge connecting Europe with Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. I also sincerely thank the GSMA organization for this pioneering partnership that will expand the global impact of the Mobile World Congress, and we are excited to support the continuation of this momentum in the Middle East.”
The details of the event are still not entirely clear at the moment, but it is clear that the event in Doha will be inspired by the Barcelona version, which has been held annually since 1987 and is one of the most important technology events in the world, and the most important event in the field of communications and mobile phones in general. From the information currently available, the expansion of the fifth generation, smart cities, artificial intelligence-powered data centers, and environmentally friendly technologies will be the most important topics that will be addressed in MWC Doha.
According to the announcement we saw during the MWC 2025 event in Doha, the goal of the MWC25 Doha event is to build on the great success achieved by the M360 MENA event (also organized by GSMA) to launch a high-profile event for the region in order to support and accelerate its progress goals. The announcement also spoke of Doha as the ideal destination for this type of event due to its world-class airport, easy access, and modern public transportation, including the Doha Metro, and of course, many hotels and hospitality and entertainment facilities.
The news of Qatar hosting the MWC Doha event highlights the country’s increasing focus on the technology sector and the development of business in communications. Qatar launched the “Digital Agenda 2030” last year, which includes 6 pillars and 23 strategic initiatives aimed at providing a major qualitative transformation in various business and industrial sectors in the emirate by 2030.
