Viewers took the bait when it came to Syfy’s buzzed-about Sharknado. In its inaugural broadcast, the made-for-TV epic disaster attracted 1.4 million viewers, 566,000 of them adults 18-49, aka the most important demo as far as networks are concerned. Sharknado’s ratings were up 29 percent from Syfy’s 2013 average for an original movie. And while its ratings were pretty impressive, Sharknado’s social media domination on Thursday night was downright jawdropping: #Sharknado was trending worldwide and registered about 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak. That’s a whole lot of shark puns, people!
Given the success of Tara Reid and Ian Ziering’s already-cult-classic, talks of a sequel have already spread like wildfire in the vast forest known as the Internet.
But a rep for Syfy tells E! News no official decision has been made in regards to a Sharknado sequel, and a source tells us there were never any plans for a follow-up movie.
Fans chomping at the bit for more of TV’s most tweeted-about shark storm ever can relive the experience soon as Syfy is airing an encore of Sharknado on Thursday, July 18.
